Valley Views - Native Species

Gold Mantled Ground Squirrel

One doesn't have to look far to see the amazing variety of species inhabitating the valleys and high sierras of Yosemite National Park. Small wonder why the species that live here are almost as interesting as the soaring mountains and cascading falls.

While black bears gain the most attention, the park is home to more than 232 species of birds, including the great gray owl and the peregrine falcon, both endangered species.

Golden-mantled ground squirrels (pictured above) are numerous, but you'll also find mule deer, marmots, foxes, bobcats, weasels, skunks and raccoons in plentiful supply.

The high country plays host to wolves, coyotes and mountain lions.

Bighorn sheep were reintroduced into Lee Vining Canyon below Tioga Pass in 1986.
